This is a selection of commonly used terms that you may
encounter when visiting a garden center, reading books on plant materials,
or attending landscaping workshops for homeowners.

Aerate

Aeration is a process that relieves soil compaction and increases water and air movement throughout the soil. Thatch is stimulated to decompose when a lawn is aerated.

Annuals

An annual is a plant that sprouts, grows, flowers, and dies within one growing season.  Some re-seed themselves.

Determinate

Also called Bush varieties. These plants reach a certain height and then stop growing. Fruits usually ripen over a four to six week period.  Many fruits mature at the same time.

Indeterminate

Indeterminate vines continue to grow and flower thorough the season.  Fewer fruits mature at one time than Determinate varieties.

Perennials

A plant that lives through several growing seasons. (Comes back every year.) If planted in the fall or very early spring. some perennials will bloom the first year they are sown. Most will spend the first year growing roots and leaves.  Blossoms usually appear the second year.

Scalping

This is a method of removing dead grass from Bermuda and Zoysia lawns. It is accomplished by mowing the grasses using a very low setting on the mower blades.

Top dressing

A management practice which is used to reduce surface compaction, smooth the uneven surface in lawn areas, and aids in the decomposition of thatch.
