movement throughout the soil. Thatch is stimulated to decompose when a lawn is aerated. |
Annuals |
An annual
is a plant that sprouts, grows, flowers, and dies within one growing season. Some
re-seed themselves. |
Determinate |
Also called Bush varieties. These plants reach a certain height
and then stop growing. Fruits usually ripen over a four to six week period. Many
fruits mature at the same time. |
Indeterminate |
Indeterminate vines continue to grow and flower thorough the season. Fewer
fruits mature at one time than Determinate varieties. |
Perennials

A plant that lives through several growing seasons. (Comes back every year.) If
planted in the fall or very early spring. some perennials will bloom the first year they
are sown. Most will spend the first year growing roots and leaves. Blossoms usually
appear the second year. |
Scalping
|
This is a method of removing dead grass from Bermuda and Zoysia lawns. It is
accomplished by mowing the grasses using a very low setting on the mower blades. |
Top dressing
|
A management practice which is used to reduce surface compaction, smooth the uneven
surface in lawn areas, and aids in the decomposition of thatch.
